Unlocking the Truth: How Your Lifestyle Choices and Genes Impact Your Heart Health
The health risks associated with being overweight or obese are well-established. However, a recent study has shed light on the impact of the reasons behind a person's obesity on their risk of heart disease. The research found that individuals who are obese due to lifestyle choices are at a higher risk of heart disease than those whose extra weight is due to genetic predisposition. This was discovered by researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Solna, Sweden, who analyzed data from over 15,000 twins from the Swedish Twin Registry. The study author, Ida Karlsson, an assistant professor at the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, explained that the link between obesity and cardiovascular disease was twice as strong in those with a genetic predisposition to a low BMI than in those with obesity driven by genetic factors. The team also examined medical registry data to establish the incidence of
heart disease in this group.
